Frozen orange juice concentrate was invented in 1942 by three members of a Florida research team, C.D Atkins, Edwin L. Moore and L. G. McDowell. They were asked to improve the taste of orange juice for the Army and to make a more efficient use for Florida Oranges. The researchers took an already well known process of making the orange juice into concentrate, but invented a way so that the orange juice could hold its flavor. They took the orange juice concentrate, added fresh juice to it and then froze it calling this process the 'cutback process'. This led to the growth of the Florida citrus industry as well as growing the surrounding industries for storing and transporting orange juice.
